Eden Valley's ideal terroir and elevation

The Fechner Vineyard in Moculta is situated at 280m elevation, just above the frost line. The vineyard's soil is clay loam soil over limestone, a standard profile in the Northern Eden Valley. This site enjoys a cooler climate compared to the Barossa Valley, and creates the perfect backdrop for ripening Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot gris (Grauburgunder) and sets the stage for excellent flavour development.

Landscape:

Nestled at an elevation of 280 meters, the vines enjoy an undulated landscape that averages 2 degrees Celsius cooler than the Barossa Valley to the west. The Pinot gris block sits perilously below the frostline.

Winemaking approach

The ROSATO is an un-conventional rosé that pays homage (stylistically) to the winemaking traditions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is a Barossa rosé made using extended Pinot gris skin contact. This technique imparts the distinct amber or orange hue to the wine and contributes to its complex flavours and fine sand-paper texture. The Pinot gris parcel underwent fermentation on skins in 2020, with a focus on adding only fresh Eden Valley wine in the next two years to freshen the final cuvée and flesh out the palate.

Bottled raw and unfiltered on October 24th, 2022, the wine's character remains untouched. While cold stabilised naturally over the winter, harmless tartrate crystals may appear if stored too long in the fridge. Serve this gem at around 10°C to fully savour its complex flavours.

Tasting notes:

The palate has a super-fresh, laid-back intensity with flavours of Aperol, blood orange, clove, and subtle hints of tomato. A harmonious blend of fruity and savory elements, culminating in a pure, softly tannic finish. The wild yeast Lachancea thermotolerans contributes to the wine's refreshing acidity and unique bio-acidification.

Cellaring potential:

Evan Evans ROSATO promises an interesting cellar journey of 10+ years under Stelvin closure.
